An ancient bristlecone pine (Pinus longeava)

The bristlecone pines (Pinus longeava) are found at the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Preserve in the White Mountains of California. Like the sequoias, they have evolved a life history of slow growth and long life. Even though the trees are only about 25 feet tall, their trunks are large. Many of the trees are over 4000 years old.
