Alder regrowth after flood (Alnus maritima in Oklahoma)
Alder regrowth after flood (Alnus maritima in Oklahoma)

The Oklahoma seaside alder (Alnus maritima ssp. oklahomensis) lives along the Blue River and nearby creeks in Oklahoma. In summer 2007, nearly all of the adult bushes were destroyed by flooding. Within a couple of months, new stems were resprouting. This is an important evolutionary plant adaptation to living along rivers and streams. Photograph by Stanley A. Rice.
